Urban Issues City Walk

From Urban Seed’s hands on experience with urban poverty, homelessness and substance abuse, we have developed a thought provoking Melbourne Walk. Melbourne Walks are designed to raise awareness of a range of social issues and challenge participants to see and think about the city in a new way.

Am Melbourne Walk in actionA typical walk will start from the front steps of the Collins Street Baptist Church with the first stop being the corner of Bourke and Swanston Streets. As well as illustrating our campaign in relation to problem gambling, this location provides an excellent contrast between the public economy of the Bourke Street Mall and the hidden economy taking place in some of the surrounding laneways.

As we move through Little Bourke Street and the surrounding area, we see some of Melbourne’s ‘hotspots’ for drug dealing and discuss “in situ” issues dealing with homelessness before heading back to Baptist Place, one of the main drug injecting places in Melbourne’s CBD.

The walk finishes at Credo Café, the site of our open lunch where we talk about our experience of building community in the city.
