Urban Seed's premises are located at the end of Baptist Place, one of Melbourne CBD's highest drug injecting locations. Our response has been to minimise the harm suffered by drug users in this space by:
- Making information available on substance use, effects and treatment options in Credo Café (more than 50% of people who attend lunch have drug or alcohol problems).
- Provide some linkages and referrals to Needle Exchange Programs, Health Services and Drug treatment services for people who have a relationship with through Credo Café.
- Providing an alternative life model for marginalised people attending Credo Café who are drug users and support them where they are trying to beat their addiction.
- Monitor drug activity and provide overdose response in Baptist Place (in 2000, the community responded to approximately 100 overdoses). We have made a conscious decision not to close Baptist Place and the Central House car park to drug users but provide access to fresh water, a syringe disposal bin and lighting. We also clean this space on a daily basis.
- Make complementary services more accessible by having them operate part time in the familiar and safe space of Credo Cafe. At present this includes a sexual health clinic, legal assistance, employment training, and providing space for short term seminars on associated issues.
