Urban Seed:edge
December 01, 2006
Our edge program has been running at Norlane High School in Geelong again this year. Edge aims at taking the students who are having trouble at school and hanging out with them for at least 10 weeks. We take them to the city a number of times and they become literate in the issues that Urban Seed deals with in the city. We then ask these students to make the many connections between their local community and the city, particularly focussing on inclusion/exclusion, stereotyping, violence and escaping reality. Of course this also gives us a chance to talk about how these issues personally effect the students. These students then play a leadership role when the school invites higher achieving students to a week long 'city life' camp with us in the city. The last day of the camp is called your context and this is where we really begin to address the issues in the local community context. From here the students together decide on a project to undertake to make their local community a better place.
