Clarification of an article published in ‘The Age’, 11/10, ‘Concert Coincides with G20 Meeting’ by Patrick Donovan and Dewi Cooke.

From this article, it seems Urban Seed could be confused as being a religious arm of the ‘StopG20’ movement. We therefore wish to clarify Urban Seed’s position. We are totally independent of ‘Stop G20’ and Make Poverty History. As an organisation we don’t adopt a uniform position on the G20 forum. While we believe in the right to participate in civil disobedience, we also believe in the right of democratically elected finance ministers to meet together.

Urban Seed has always believed in the importance of knowing all sides of an argument. Some of our employees have attended ‘StopG20’ planning gatherings to see what has been happening, advocating non-violence protest for those who feel they must protest. We have also been involved in the planning of Make Poverty History events, particularly the festival taking place on the Saturday of the G20 in Alexandra gardens.

My personal opinion is that this specific meeting of G20 should not be blockaded. Rather, it should be allowed to take place so that aid and trade issues can be discussed. However, this does not mean that we shouldn’t continue to critique the economic systems that are making countries poor in the first place. Personally, I will be doing my best to see that violence does not take place if a number of people converge on the area.
