The Commonwealth Games promotional material suggests that the Games offers the people of Melbourne a chance to ‘celebrate diversity’ and be ‘united by the moment’. The experience of workers at Urban Seed in Melbourne’s CBD is that some policies and practices operate to homogenize, not diversify the city, and that rather than feeling united with the rest of the community, vulnerable and marginalised people experience prejudice, misunderstanding and fear because of the increased public scrutiny and the heightened sensitivity to negative feedback during an event like the Games.
