Street Work

Urban Seed's back door is at the end of Baptist Place, historically one of Melbourne CBD's most frequently used drug injecting locations. Our response to crises and overdoses at our back door have been important shapers of our work. We have engaged with the people who use the space in the following ways:

  • Extending an invitation to share lunch in Credo Cafe.
  • Making information available on substance use, effects and treatment options.
  • Providing linkages and referrals to Needle Exchange Programs, health services and drug treatment services.
  • Extending friendship and support to all who attend Credo Cafe, and supporting drug users to understand and tackle their addiction.
  • Monitoring drug activity and providing overdose response in Baptist Place. We have made a conscious decision not to close Baptist Place and the Central House car park to drug users but provide access to fresh water, a syringe disposal bin and lighting - a 'harm reduction' approach. We also clean this space regularly.
